Saturday’s Latvian parliamentary election was a success for the centre-left coalition, the Harmony Centre, which became the largest parliamentary group with 32 of the 100 seats in the Saeima.
Harmony Centre is a coalition between the Social Democratic Party Harmony (SDPS) and the Socialist Party (LSP) and has in particular its support in the Russian-speaking minority. Despite the electoral success, it is unlikely that they will get seats in the government.
13 parties participated in the elections and five passed the five percent threshold:
| Party | Election results |
| Harmony Centre | 28.43% |
| Zatlers’ Reform Party | 20.73% |
| Unity | 18.75% |
| National Alliance | 13.79% |
| Union of Greens & Farmers | 12.12% |
Latvian Social Democratic Workers’ Party (LSDSP), the Latvian member party of the Socialist International and the Party of European Socialists, has not had representation in the national parliament since 2002.
Good news – but it stills seems likely that the right wing parties will form a government coalition. Would be great to receive further updates on this!
