The Fiscal Compact is Unachievable

24/05/2012 by Malcolm Sawyer
malcolm sawyer

There is a key element of the ‘fiscal compact’ being signed up to by most members of the European Union which is unachievable for most of the countries involved and striving to meet that objective will be highly detrimental and doomed to failure. It is the notion of achieving a balanced structural budget (technically a [...]

Diverging Europe

This year’s edition of the ETUI’s flagship publication provides ample evidence that Europe is falling apart as a result of the EU leaders’ austerity mania.

In its six chapters the authors of the report highlight growing divergences between member state countries in the areas of macro-economic developments, labour markets, collective bargaining, energy policies and respect for social dialogue. These divergences are in stark contrast to the original values of European integration and convergence. In its introduction the publication warns for anti-European populism with big negative impacts on the next European elections in 2014.

The full publication as well as special infographics showing the main conclusions of the Benchmarking are available from the ETUI website
